It's not clear to me what the goal is, or if efficiency is a concern, but if
it is, you might want to benchmark against:
01 WS-A.
05 WS-B pic 9(04).

MOVE 3 TO WS-B.
MOVE WS-B TO WS-C.
...
DISPLAY " A:" WS-A ":"
DISPLAY " B:" WS-B ":"
DISPLAY " C:" WS-C ":"
Part of what is interesting about COBOL is what you can do with how you
define your data structures, to simply or reduce computation and increase
efficiencies.
