Dan:
I always used TAPESCAN from the CSL to read tapes. It gave you the label
info, the size of the blocks and the first few records in ASCII and EBCDIC
if you requested it to do so.
Pretty slick when you have tapes which you need to read.
Without that, you could use FCOPY if you get the label info after mounting
the tape. I have created ANSI labeled tapes on the HP3000-however,
unlabelled was the standard way I usually wrote HP3000 tapes. Just FYI.

Subject: [HP3000-L] Reel-toRell- Tape Question
Hi -L Gang,
We have a request from a remote site to ascertain what is on a set of reel-
to-reel tapes. They are unclear about what they want to find, but my
primary issue is how to read the tapes.
The tapes load with the message:
6:53/20/Vol TMAR01 (ANS) mounted on LDEV# 8
Doing something generic like running TAPLIS.XLTOOLS.TELESUP will not read
the tapes. We have tried restoring a for sure non-existant file form the
tape to force it to be read, to no avail. I just tried issuing a file
equate thinking a tape label was the answer:
file t;dev=8;label=TMAR01,ANS
nope, thanks for playing ;-).....
Any ideas ?
TIA,
Dan
p.s. I have been thru the archives, but did not find any leads there.....
