Let me just disagree with you Joe. (Surprise, surprise.) My disagreement
is about your comment that "... how HP is changing more like Compaq. This
would NOT BE nice."
Compaq was an excellent company and was very focused on its customers. I
have bought lots (relatively speaking) of Compaq equipment of the years and
I was always impressed with it. Indeed my Windows server is a Compaq
ProLiant, which I bought before HP bought Compaq. My laptops over the years
have always been Compaqs, and so on and so on.
In many ways, pre-merger Compaq was more like the old HP than HP was at the
time of the merger and has been since.
Compaq did a huge misstep when they acquired first Tandem and then DEC.
They should never have done that and that was the reason Eckard Pfeiffer was
ultimately fired at Compaq. These senseless acquisitions proved to be too
much for Compaq to assimilate and weakened the company financially.
When HP bought Compaq I was worried HP would screw up Compaq and its
customer focus. I was worried that HP would not learn FROM Compaq how to
take care of their customers. HP had lost its (HP) way, before they bought
Compaq, I was hoping they might regain some of it with the Compaq
acquisition. It was not to be. Even though they did a marvelous job of
sorting out the various "best of breeds" in hardware and products, they did
not regain their customer focus or take in the existing Compaq customer
focus.
My latest laptop, 3 months old, is NOT a Compaq or an HP. It's a Toshiba
and my single quick call to customer support was answered instantly, no
waiting, and the issue was resolved in a flash. End of story.
To my mind, HP would do well to name Ann Livermore as CEO, immediately. She
is one impressive lady and VERY customer oriented. That's what HP needs
right now.
