It just means "to quiet".

If you can't say something in Latin or Greek, you wouldn't sound like you
know what you're talking about, would you? Melanoma is one of the most dreaded of
cancers, but if the doctor told you that you have a "black bump," which is
what melanoma means, would that sound anywhere near as serious?

Greek and Latin words and phrases are profoundly important if you wish to
intimidate others with your knowledge of a subject.
