It's an ego thing as well as the illusion Americans have that they are
somehow "safer" in larger vehicles.

It is a momentum thing.  A larger, or should I say heavier, vehicle will
tend to plow through a lighter vehicle.  This might already be taken
into account when designing safety features, but is probably not
significant unless it is a collision between a fully loaded Tractor
Trailer and a Geo Metro or the like.
