we use a product called ClientVantage. it regularly executes a
transaction and times the result. the result is posted to a database and
tabulated for the day, week, month and year's values. it also notifies if
the transaction fails to complete in a timely manner. we do this for
about 50 different systems. all of the transactions are read only so
there is no change to the databases on these systems. I'm sure there are
other like products on the market. it helps up keep a 99.8% uptime for
our systems.

Re: system response time
What tools do you use to measure performance? I've been asked to find
some way of measuring the performance of an application that will be
ported.
<snip long notes about performance>
