My basic answer is that "middle-class" is an household where some adult members have to actually work to financially sustain the household, but are still able to buy consumer goods beyond mere survival (i.e. rent, food, clothing).

And I perfectly realize that this definition covers perhaps 80% of the population in most Western countries, with, of course, vast differences.

Just speaking for myself.
