Remember that the UTC Telephone system is being replaced starting TODAY
October 29th at 2:30 PM. This will be major improvement in telephone
service by replacing the 16 year old phone system with a new state of
the art system that should serve the University for many years.

Summary of actions to get the new system working:
Starting at 2:30 PM today, BellSouth will be moving the 5000 UTC
numbers to the new phone system. This action should take approximately
5 hours. In addition Southeastern TeleComm contractor personnel will
concurrently be moving and splicing the approximately 12,000 pair of
cable connecting all UTC telephones to the campus and public telephone
system--a task that should take approximately 10 hours.

Most administrative telephones in the 4000 and 5000 number group should
remain operational until approximately 5 PM. The actual time is
dependent upon the speed the BellSouth technicians carry out the
process. During this cutover campus phone service will be in limited
operation until approximately midnight Friday when all phones should
have dial tone.

We regret the temporary service disruption and will do everything
possible to limit the down time. UTC operators will be on duty Saturday
8 AM to 8 PM to staff the UTC Telephone trouble line 4784 and check
emails to [log in to unmask] so that technicians can resolve any know
issue on Saturday. This number and email address will remain in
operation during normal University business hours in the future.

If you have any issues with your telephone starting Saturday morning
please report the phone number and the problem via email or phone. In
addition, technical staff will be checking of all emergency, elevator
and available UTC phones on Saturday. If you are on campus on Saturday
please check your phone and let us know of any issues.

The campus security phone 756-4357 and the UTC Help line 4357 should
remain operation in the campus security office during the entire
process.
