I think it's on the order of 50,000 thereabouts before you get into
danger of system aborts if you purge a file that's alphabetically
towards the beginning of the directory (since the XM transaction
has to include the entire directory being shifted down as a result).

I think later MPE versions improve this somewhat, but if the number
you're considering is significantly lower than 50K you're probably
fine, and if it's significantly bigger than that you definitely have
a problem.
