CAMPUS CROSSROADS OPENS
The Campus Crossroads, in the basement of Guerry Center, is open for 
business with Subway and Grille Works serving Monday thru Thursday, 10 
a.m. to midnight and Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Crossroads is closed on 
Saturday and Sunday.

CLUB SOCCER HOLDING TRYOUTS
A group of UTC students is trying to organize a Club Soccer team.  
Tryouts continue next week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7-9 
p.m. at the soccer field at the Chattanooga School for the Arts and 
Sciences (located on 3rd Street beyond the Challenger Center). A $5 fee 
is charged for tryouts and if you are selected for the team that money 
goes towards the team fee. Email [log in to unmask] for more

AUTHOR TO SPEAK ON CAMPUS
Distinguished author and professor Allen Wier will present the Connor 
Society's second program of the year on September 27th at the UTC Fine 
Arts Center. The author of the novels "A Place for Outlaws," "Departing 
as Air" and "Blanco" will speak at 7 pm in the
Roland Hayes Concert Hall.   The event is free and open to the public.
      The Connor Society was established last year to celebrate the life 
of the late UTC English professor and department head George C. Connor. 
   Connor was an enormously influential individual on and off the campus 
in his holes as teacher, administrator, and civic leader.
A reception honoring Wier and saluting Mr. Connor will be held, 
beginning at 5:30 pm in the Patten House (Faculty Club) on the UTC 
Campus.    The cost is $25 with all proceeds going to the Connor 
Society to fund future programs.
    Wier, who has also written short stories and essays, is a member of 
the Fellowship of Southern Writers and has been featured at sessions of 
the Chattanooga Conference on Southern Literature.   He has appeared 
several times at the Meacham Writers Workshops at UTC as well in the 
past twenty years.
    Reservations for the reception mayd be made by sending a check for 
$25 to the Connor Society, 732 Cherry Street, Chattanooga, TN 37402.   
Please make check out to the Connor Society of the UC Foundation.
     Allen Wier will be reading from his work in the Flag Room of the 
Guerry Center at 3 pm on Monday, September 27th.   He is a fantastic 
reader, as those who have heard him at the Southern Writers Conference 
and various Meacham Writers Workshops on campus will
attest.  While this event is shaped for the Honors program, students 
and faculty should feel free to attend.   The presentation that Allen
will be doing in the evening, at 7 pm in the Roland Hayes is a lecture 
on the place of values in literature entitled "Beautiful Untrue 
Things."   This event is free and open to the public.

CHATTANOOGA SINGERS ACCEPTING NEW MEMBERS
The Chattanooga Singers (MUS 020) is still accepting new members and 
there is no longer an audition for admission.  It is open to all 
students.  Chattanooga Singers has more than doubled in size since this 
time last year which is exciting, however, we only have three basses!!!!

The Black Student Alliance will meet Thursday, September 9, 2004 in the 
U. C. Signal Mountain Room. The Black Student Alliance meets every 2nd 
and 4th Thursday. If you are interested in participating on a

The Multicultural Students’ Alliance(MSA), a new student organization, 
has been formed to serve as an outlet to provide forums for collective 
dialogue and action for the improvement and welfare for multicultural 
students (All students).

MSA offers  unique opportunities for each students & student 
organization to serve. MSA's looking for students to serve in the 
following areas:
-Communications Committee (Newsletter Editor,Historian,Webmaster)
-Political Action Committee
-Campus Social/Cultural Committee
-Fundraising Committee

MSA also need engergetic students who would like to help in the 
establishment of new programs and events. If you are interested in MSA

JOB OPPORTUNITIES ON CAMPUS
GEAR UP Tutoring Positions Available

UTC Students - GEAR UP Applications are going fast and so will the 
positions. If you are still interested in applying for a tutoring 
position with GEAR UP and you have picked up an application, you need 
to get them in as soon as possible. We will hold interviews Monday, 
August 30-Friday, September 3 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. You must have your 
application turned in to receive an interview. GEAR UP is currently  
hiring for after school tutors in math and reading. The hours are 
Monday-Thursday 2:00-5:20 p.m., 2:30-5:30, or 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. There 
are some flexible hours available during the school day as well. This 
is an excellent opportunity to earn some extra cash and work with the 
best group of 7th and 8th graders in Chattanooga. For more information,

BOOK SALE BENEFITS PUBLIC LIBRARY
It's time for the Friends of the Library Book Sale again.  The dates 
are from Monday, August 30, through Tuesday, September 7. The hours are
9:00 A.M.-9:00 P.M. on Monday-Saturday, Noon-6:00 P.M. on Sunday, and 
9:00 A.M.-9:00 P.M. on Monday-Tuesday.
    All proceeds go to benefit the Chattanooga-Hamilton County 
Bicentennial Library.
    The location is slightly different this time. We will be inside 
Northgate Mall outside the entrance to Proffitt's instead of our usual 
location at the center of the mall.

M-SQUAD DANCE TEAM ACCEPTING NEW MEMBERS
The UTC M-Sqaud Dance Team is looking for dancers for their 2004-2005 
school year. We are looking for dancers of all dance levels and
backgrounds (Hip Hop, Jazz, Ballet, Modern, Tumbling). For all those 
who are interesting in joining or have questions, we will be hosting a
Recruitment Meeting on Sunday, August 29, 2004 at 5:00pm in the UC 
Sequoyah Room 258.  We will be open for all questions and concerns you 
may have.

FIREFLY FILM FEST SEEKS ENTRIES
The Firefly Film Fest is seeking entries for documentary, music video, 
and short film.  Sponsored by the UTC Television Studio and Clumpie's
Ice Cream, this event is designed to unite students at UTC and 
filmakers in Chattanooga with their counterparts around the world.  The 
fest is completely open to amateur, independent, student and 
professional films.
    Now accepting submissions for the following:
      1. Documentary: 30 minutes or less
      2. Shorts: Also 30 minutes or less
      3. Music Video: Preferred, but not limited to, unsigned artists
    The deadline for submissions is September 15th. Submission Fee: $10,
$15 for submissions after September 15th.
       -Entries will be accepted on Mini-DV, VHS or DVD.
       -Be sure to label your submission with the following:  Name, 
title, type, duration, and info about yourself for the program.
