Maybe your solution is to put the data into a byte-stream file. It acts
like a variable file, without really being a variable file. And it is more
like a PC file.

Subject: [HP3000-L] FTP'ing Files To A PC
I need to transfer files from the 3000 to a PC. I am
using Minisoft file transfer today and everything
works okay, but I am looking for a more independent
and robust way of doing things, hence FTP.
I can FTP the files from the 3000 to the PC just fine.
However, when the file gets to the PC it is useless;
that is, the PC application can't process the file
correctly. The 3000 file is created in a COBOL
program and defaults to fixed, ASCII 80-byte records.
By examining the file on the PC (via Notepad) I see
that the file is padded with blanks for the full
80-characters. Removing these trailing blanks renders
a usable file.
My question is: How can I remove these trailing
blanks either before or during the transfer?
I have tried variable records (binary and ASCII) and
binary FTP without success. I even tried TOBYTE but
that produced an "e e cummings" file when transferred
to the PC.
Any ideas?
