Some patches do not require a reboot.  Usually, if the patch process generates only a store tape (not an SLT) you can accomplish the install without a reboot.  I personally prefer to use PATCHIX for patch installs.  One advantage is that it allows access to information about the patch, such as whether a boot is required.
