>Zephyr Dance is an all-female company bringing a fresh approach to classic
>modernism. Zephyr’s work is conceptual, metaphorical, and
>layered. Artistic Director Michelle Kranicke and Associate Artistic
>Director Emily Stein have developed decidedly unique and complimentary
>styles of movement that constantly endeavor to stretch the limits of the
>female body. Zephyr’s elegant work is innovative, while remaining
>grounded in traditional theatrical space.

>Since 1989 Zephyr Dance has been a premier modern dance company in Chicago
>and throughout the United States committed to artistic excellence in dance
>and to sharing that excellence with diverse audiences through performance
>and education. Zephyr Dance has consistently received rave reviews in
>both its home town of Chicago and throughout the United States for its
>“gripping” and “evocatively structured” choreography (Lucia Mauro, Chicago
>Tribune) and its virtuosity as “an extremely tight company, powerful in
>their imagery” (Jay Rath, Wisconsin State Journal). ) Zephyr has earned
>kudos for creating innovative works that are not only visually
>electrifying but also intellectually and emotionally invigorating.

>Zephyr’s program will feature three original works from Artistic Director
>Michelle Kranicke and Associate Director Emily Stein.

>Ms. Kranicke’s The Rhythm of Irreversible Direction uses a combination of
>lyrical, geometric and pedestrian movement and gesture to create a
>haunting exploration of the concept of time passing. The work
>incorporates dancers’ use of vocal and physical improvisation to create a
>tonal as well as visual landscape. The work offers “entrancing
>combinations of performer-generated chants and Eastern inspired coiling of
>the wrists”. (Lucia Mauro, Chicago Tribune). The Moment of Disappearing,
>choreographed by Ms. Stein, investigates the concept of boundaries in
>various realms, whether physical, geographical, psychological or
>emotional. The work explores the intangible and often abstruse
>distinction between stillness and movement; silence and sound; individual
>and couple. The casting is flexible and the piece calls for some
>improvisation by the dancers, thereby creating a slightly different work
>with each performance. The two works “effectively use space and its
>infinite ability to be sculpted through movement to create meditatively
>engaging pieces.”(Lucia Mauro, Chicago Tribune). Also on the program will
>be Wanderthrough, Ms. Kranicke’s tour-de-force ensemble piece inspired by
>William Gass’s On Being Blue: A Philosophical Inquiry. A breath-taking
>vivacious work, Wanderthrough was described as “a 20-minute odyssey of
>sound and high energy creativity, a showcase for Michelle Kranicke’s
>riveting choreography…” (Tom Springer, Kalamazoo Gazette).
