Thank you to all who have responded to my query for information regarding
our VA7100 "problem" with the two HP3000's hooked to it. In regards to the
response that it may be swapping data from one raid type to another
depending on the amount of free space left on the total available space,
does anyone know how to get reports from the VA7100 using the command view
software? We were not really given much training on the VA at all, and
basically told it was best to stay away from the command view software all
together. We recently had a drive go bad, so I did have an opportunity to
poke around in there, with the aid of an HP storage person telling me what
to do. Anyway, is there a way to tell if the VA is calling this "makespace"
command that is supposed to cause a performance hit. I know for a fact we
are using a lot of the space configured on the VA (and, as quarter end
approaches, we need MORE space).

I'm just trying to find a way to get a report or ANYTHING that can explain
what is going on. We know our app was written wrong 20 years ago, it does
way to much disc i/o, it does a lot of things in a way that adds lots of
overhead to the box. Unfortunately, we probably are not going to be able to
do very much about how bad the apps have been written. But if I can get
real data that shows me specific things that may be causing the slowness
problems, I can at least take that back to my boss so we can look at what
can be done. It would be nice to have reports from the VA so we can really
see if it is the problem, or if we need to look at other things. Yes, we
have glance, and do run glance and try to get real time data when we are
experiencing peak slow times. I'm told that because the VA is autoraid, the
glance disc data will not be "real" in terms of what is actually going on.
I do know if you go the "status" screen for the VA, it seems it says it is
always displaying "Disk scrubbing in progress".

Thanks in advance for all the help you all have provided.
