As a followup, HP support responded (a minor miracle
in itself) with confirmation that the print rendering
engine has been removed from the LJ 3500 and put into
the print driver on the "host".  The LJ 3500 expects
the page to be completed formatted on the host before
being sent to it.  As such, it will not respond to
either PCL nor PostScript.
