IIRC his very first boss mentioned to him that this assignment was
likely to be purely temporary.

If that's temporary, then "permanent" needs to be redefined.

Mr Cooke is quite definitely a legend in his own lifetime. I believe
that his urbanity and insight have rarely been matched, never bettered.
