This sound like he would like to print automagically. If so, I can't help.
Our need is get an HP report to a user to view on the screen and then let
him print it if he wants without having to adjust page settings.

Just stripping the HP codes off won't cut it -- you have to translate them
into something other end will understand -- ideally a supported format their
software, not just PCL escape codes that might print ok but probably won't
look right on the screen. Also, for an old-style line-printer report to be
printed on a laser, you need to add a code for landscape.

Does anyone (else) have a way to do this? Does the oft-plugged 'txt2pdf'
handle this?

The only PC format that I know enough about to write on the HP, and which
lets you specify what you need to, is RTF.

I have a command-file to do HP-to-RTF conversion for plain-vanila reports.
More than willing to post if anyone wants. It's 206 lines, including
comments, so I don't want to clutter up everyone's email if noboby wants it.

Meanwhile, we have been having epic email problems lately (delays up to 24
hours on test mails to ourselves between computers 10 feet from each other -
litterally many times slower than actual 'snail mail' would be if we could
tape a message to the back of a snail), so I don't know when/if anyone will
get this, or I will see the reply(s). And did anyone see my post on this
from last week? It is about 1:156 pm PST as I prepare to hit the send
button...
