The Wild Orchids of Tennessee
Monday, March 29

Many people are surprised to learn that a large number of orchids are
among
the myriad of wildflowers in the Chattanooga area. These orchids are
not
the familiar tropical blooms used in corsages, but are equally lovely in
their native habitat. Besides being beautiful, they are also very
interesting to learn about in terms of their ecology and why their
numbers
are declining.

Instructor: Chuck Wilson, a TVA nuclear engineer, is a charter member of
the
Tennessee Native Plant Society and past president of the American
Association of Field Botanists. He is active in various local
conservation
efforts and a frequent traveler to all corners of North America in
search
of
wild orchids.

Butterflies and the Plants Caterpillars Love to Eat
Tuesday, March 30

Caterpillars munching beautiful plants are often the targets of irate
gardeners - but hold those sprays and poisons! The plant-eating
caterpillar
you spare today may be the beautiful butterfly you admire tomorrow!
Tennessee's official state butterfly, the Zebra Swallowtail, dines on
pawpaw
as a caterpillar. Monarchs love beautiful orange butterflyweed. Learn
which native plants butterflies love and how to include them in your
landscape as food for caterpillars.

Instructor: Bill Haley, an accomplished naturalist and avid hawk
watcher,
is
the Education Outreach Coordinator at the Aquarium.

Landscaping the Easy Way - with Native Shrubs
Thursday, April 1

Longtime native plant enthusiast - and active gardener - Judy Lowe will
illustrate how to achieve an attractive easy-to-maintain landscape by
incorporating native shrubs. Learn to add more blooms to your yard with
proper native shrub selection. Judy's newest book will be available for
purchase and she will be happy to sign your copy.

Instructor: Judy Lowe is an award-winning garden writer whose numerous
articles appeared in local Chattanooga papers for over 20 years in
addition
to Southern Living, Woman's Day and other publications. She is the
author
of Tennessee Gardener's Guide and the just-published Month by Month
Gardening in Tennessee and Kentucky.

Additional Workshop....
GROWING HERBS FOR YOUR KITCHEN AND MEDICINE CABINET
Saturday, April 24, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. (Central Time)

Patrick Ironwood, director of landscape and architecture at the
Sequatchie
Valley Institute (SVI) and Carol Kimmons, director of education, will
teach
you how to grow healthy and tasty herbs - some may already be growing in
your yard! We'll identify common edible and medicinal plants while
becoming
more familiar with cultivated varieties. In addition to touring the SVI
edible landscape and gardens, learn how to use plant extracts to mix up
a
salve made with an infusion of medicinal herbs, olive oil and beeswax to
use
on cuts, scrapes or as a moisturizer. Includes a delicious herbal lunch
fresh from the garden and an herbal cutting to plant at home.

SVI is a non-profit educational organization and center of sustainable
living.

Travel to Tennessee Overhill country in Riceville, Tennessee rich in an
agricultural tradition that began with Overhill Cherokee gardens planted
in
villages along creeks and river bottoms. Our contemporary tour of
gardens
will include Mouse Creek Nursery and Sunshine Hollow. Mouse Creek
Nursery
is known as the largest perennial grower in East Tenn. featuring unusual
annuals and old-fashioned perennials. Meeting in a restored pre-Civil
War
church, owner Ruth Bumgardener will tell us how she propagates and grows
her
nursery stock before we tour the greenhouses and display gardens. A
short
drive brings us to Sunshine Hollow where we will enjoy a delicious lunch
with a discussion by owner Vicki Rhyne about of the nationally
recognized
day lilies and hostas this nursery is known for. Then stroll along
natural
and landscaped trails through daylily and hosta exhibition gardens and
leave
with inspiration for your own landscapes. We will allow time for you to
