I think on that system the max is 16 gig. of memory

Dane, CPU board slots have nothing to do with how many slots you have for
memory.
Systems come with memory carriers and have the necessary slots for the
maximum allowed memory.
In the case of the 997 you can have up to 8GB of memory so you have the
possible allocation of two memory carriers each with 8 slots. This allows
you to put 16 512MB cards.
I think this is correct. Please chime in if others know different
