It appears the ancient Romans were smarter than we are. In classical Latin,
the word Mars means "killer of spacecraft."

Beagle 2 status report ...

Tonight, the Jodrell Bank telescope in the UK detected no signal from the
Beagle
2 lander. Due to clear weather conditions and less noise, the opportunity for
reception was better than on 26 December.

Earlier in the evening of 26 December, no signal had been detected by NASA's
Mars Odyssey spacecraft flying in orbit overhead.

The next opportunity to listen with Mars Odyssey will take place at 07:15 CET
on
27 December.
