one more thing about FTP performance, pay attention to your network
configuration.

I transfer some fairly big files every night 75 Megabytes, it takes
about 15 seconds to transfer. Then one-day, for no apparent reason the
same exact transfer took 5 hours. The problem was one of our network
techy made some minor network configuration changes. The port that the
HP3000 Nic. was plugged into had been changed to half duplex, yeap, [...]39_18Dec200314:34:[log in to unmask]

Looks like the process is hanging on an FREAD of an empty message file.
