one more thing about FTP performance, pay attention to your network
configuration.
I transfer some fairly big files every night 75 Megabytes, it takes
about 15 seconds to transfer. Then one-day, for no apparent reason the
same exact transfer took 5 hours. The problem was one of our network
techy made some minor network configuration changes. The port that the
HP3000 Nic. was plugged into had been changed to half duplex, yeap, that
was the only change, and 15 seconds turned into 5 hours!

And I'll bet you they argued for days that there hasn't been any changes
to the network.
