these last few years when the "marriage penalty" in the tax system has
been discussed at length.

Well the marriage penalty is one of those "it depends". There is a
marriage penalty if both partners make about the same amount. However
there is a marriage reward(the joint filers pay less than two singles)
if there is a large enough discrepancy between incomes. Large does NOT
mean one makes 500,000 and the other 20,000, but more like 2:1 or 3:1
