you were doing real well up 'til that last sentence :-(  at the
os-level, there's no way that i'm aware of to talk/listen to the ups on
a 5.5 system.  ups monitoring was introduced in 7.0(???) but is of no
help to you :-(

i guessing that your ups is actually configured onto the system??  in
that case, i believe a console message is generated when the system
switches to ups.  you could rig up some sort of console scraping thing
looking for 'power' messages but that's not much of a solution.   - d
