Credit Card Fraud
Fraud involving credit cards can be the most dangerous fraud of all,
because not only can money be lost but a good credit rating could also be
lost. There are different degrees of seriousness to these crimes, but
steps can be taken to prevent even the smallest degree of credit fraud.
1. If you must carry a credit card, do so only when you know that you will
be using it. Always carry them in a safe place, preferably in a pocket or
clothing rather than a purse. A purse only makes it easier to steal.
2. Always keep a written record of all credit cards, account numbers,
expiration dates, and emergency customer service numbers. Always take a
daily inventory of your credit cards to confirm that they are all still in
your possession.
3. When using your card, double check to make sure that you have been
charged the correct amount. Always make sure that your card has been
returned to you and not to another customer. If carbon slips are used,
always rip them into pieces and discard them.
4. Always cut up expired cards. Never simply throw them away.
5. If someone contacts you over the telephone, claiming that you are
eligible for anything, never give them your account number. Once that
information has been obtained, you are held liable for any charges.
6. Sometimes credit cards are not the only financial target. Fraud can
also surround ATM cards and checks. Always keep track of check
numbers. One frequent occurrence is the stealing of one check out of the
middle of a checkbook. That could be disastrous. Also never write down
your secret PIN number for your teller card. If you must write it down,
keep it in a separate location, never in your wallet or the back of the card!
