I didn't take Scott Adam's target as certification per se as much as the
classes people take to pass them. I know a few folks who got sucked into
the promise of big money after paying thousands for a class to help them
pass a certification test. Most of the individuals I know that have taken
these classes have a very thin technical and/or business background. I'm
sure we have all know some individuals who are certified but can't tell the
difference from an ASP and a hole in their router when it comes to a real
life business scenario. And I'm sure we all know people who are very bright
in their field, some certified and some not. I don't know if Jeff Kell is a
certified Cisco professional, but I would feel VERY comfortable setting up
my WAN. Personally I don't think that certification alone is a gateway
question. It's just another item to consider. (I often wonder if
certification precludes some employment opportunity from some jobs where a
'frugal' employer doesn't want to pay the big bucks, like being
under-employed with an MBA or Ph.D.)
