The AAUP website cited by Professor McAllister and others on the Raven
certainly illustrates how poorly our faculty are paid compared with their
colleagues in other states. If we compare salaries within the state
however, it is worth noting that UTC has more than "held its own" among
Tennessee comprehensive universities (AAUP category IIA) over the past five
years.

Tennessee institutions placed in category IIA by AAUP are:
         Austin Peay State University
         Belmont University
         East TN State University
         Freed-Hardeman University
         Lipscomb University
         Middle TN State University
         Tennessee State University
         Tennessee Technological Univ.
         University of TN, Martin
         Union University
         University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

Rankings of UTC average salaries (not including chairs or administrators)
among these eleven schools were as follows in 1997 and 2002.

         Academic Rank 1997-98 2002-03
         Full Professor 5/11 3/11
         Associate Professor 3/11 3/11
         Assistant Professor 6/11 2/11

Among tenure-track ranks we have moved from the "middle of the pack" to the
top three. Assistant professors are, on the average, paid higher than
their counterparts at all other state institutions in the category. Only
Belmont assistants are paid higher. Associate and full professors lag
behind only MTSU (where five doctoral programs exist) and Tennessee Tech
(with extensive engineering and high technology programs and one doctoral
program).

UTC faculty like their staff counterparts and faculty colleagues at other
Tennessee institutions remain woefully underpaid. Improved compensation
must remain an urgent priority of this University. It is heartening to
note however, that UTC's position has improved significantly among its ten
in-state peers.
