Ponies? You mean deco bottles?

Nothing wrong with that per se. I've done tons of dives on doubles that
were to 60 ft or less. Where else would you do training dives?

Lets see 280 cu feet of air on a less than 30 minute dive to less than 30
feet.  Seems to me something is wrong with that.
