Dr. Lynn Ourth, Professor of Psychology, has received $50,000 from the
Hamilton County Community Services Agency (HCCSA) to support the second
round of funding for his Mentoring and Tutoring Services.
Dr. Ourth initiated these services for students earlier this year, with
support from another $50,000 award from HCCSA. The program serves
participants between the ages of 12 and 18 who have been referred to the
juvenile courts or the Department of Children’s Services; participants
include children currently in state custody and those adjusting to the
transition from state custody back to family life.
To make the program the success it is today, Dr. Ourth has utilized the
talents of UTC students, having them serve as mentors and tutors to these
troubled children. Three times a week, the tutors provide academic tutoring
and social support for the participants, forming bonds along the way which
allow for personal growth far beyond the boundaries of the classroom
experience.
Already, program participants have experienced great improvements both
academically and personally, and the process has touched the lives of UTC
tutors as well, enabling them to achieve personal growth as a result of this
valuable applied experience.
Congratulations to Dr. Ourth! This program demonstrates just how valuable
university outreach activities can be to both the community and the
university’s students, and it provides a vital service to community youths
most in need of this assistance.
