Some time ago, I read a posting (I think it was on this list) about adding certain special
characters to your email address when responding to inquiries or joining mailing lists.
The trick was to add certain characters to your "name" portion of the address which are ignored
by some email servers. This allows you to tell where a sender got you address.
For example, if my address is [log in to unmask], I would join a list using
terry.simpkins~1.xyz.com The ~1 is ignored by the mail server and the message is delivered to
me. However, if I recorded where I used the ~1 address, I know where the "spammer" got my address.
It also gives you a way to filter messages.
Anyone remember this posting? Can anyone provide more details and exactly what characters are ignored?
