This is getting a bit beyond the scope of 'Wirts predictions' but that
is not my call to make.

I believe the League of Nations (which the USA qwas not a member) defined
the borders of the Middle East carved out of the Ottoman Empire after
WWI.  The USA took the step of opening diplomatic relations with what
is now Saudi Arabia and helped turn it into a country.  The rest became
colonies of the European Powers (mainly France, UK and Italy).

Germany played a big part in the days leading up to and including WWII
by fueling discontent and allying with Italy to launch military action
via Libya.
