From the 293x manual dated Dec-83

Character Set Stroke Weight (2933/34a)

This escape sequence designates stroke weight. A value field greater
than 0 (zero) will default to bold stroke weight if this cartridge is
present, and a value field less than or equal to 0 (zero) will map into
the normal stroke weight.

Subject: OT: old escape sequences

I'm looking at a print file, and it contains a pair of escape sequence:
[Esc](s3B and [Esc](s0B. Those sure do look familiar. Googling turns up
lots
and lots of printers that use these, including LaserJets. I suspect this
is
much older than LaserJets. I think it's older than me.

Does anyone care to reminisce? Who first said "[Esc](s3B" turns on bold?
