Have you considered JDBC?  There are free and commercial versions
available for the 3000.  Other Java solutions might include the
TurboImage class that Mike Yawn wrote or ADBC from www.advnetsys.com.
I have found that type 4 JDBC drivers blow away ODBC in a read-only
data pull.  Java is well supported on Linux too.
