This question was sent to me, and has just enough to it to sound like a real
question.

As I read the question below, apparently, something on the HP 9000 allows
Bob and friends to store forms on their 9000, instead of on their HP8100
printer. Their application has PCL form call to form macros, which pick them
up from the 9000, instead of on the printer. As such, printing this JCL on
any PCL-compatible printer, even with those forms loaded, does not work.

Is this possible? Is this some proprietary feature of the 9000? Or, OTOH, is
it simply the case of ignorance keeping folks from changing from HP8100s to
other printers? Or, is it somewhere in between those two extremes?

Normally, I would tag this OT...

We currently do our own printing, envelope stuffing and mailing. We store
PCL
macros on disks resident on HP9000 (and HP8100) printers. When we process
the print job, the output from the computer contains embedded macros to call
up
the PCL from the disks and combine it with the data coming from the
computer,
building the final output which is printed.

This was the procedure recommended by HP and we followed it. Unfortunately
it is
apparently proprietary to HP. Others have tried to adapt this process to
another
system and been totally unsuccessful.

If you feel you have the solution that can handle this type of
processing please feel free to contact me.
