There is no longer any distinction between .com, .org, or .net. Anybody can
register any of those domains.

Entities wishing to register .edu are supposed to provide some kind of
documentation that they are an educational entity before registering .edu.
Don't ask me what kind of documentation or what the definition of
"educational entity" is, I don't know.
