Hi John,
My understanding is that when you are a node on the internet, you're
available to be hacked. Your ISP probably gives you a TCP/IP address when
you dial in. So a potential hacker has to be looking at that address while
you're on the internet. So its probably OK, but not without risk, to go
without a firewall.
I prefer ZoneAlarm because it catches all the software on your PC that tries
to phone home while you're on the internet. Just like you attach to port 80
of a web site, WRQ does fast transfers over specific ports of your PC.
You'll need to open those ports on your firewall so WRQ can use them. I
believe the ports were mentioned in a previous post to 3000-L.

Subject: [HP3000-L] OT: WRQ, XP, File Transfer, & Firewall
I am using WRQ v6.0, Windows XP, and the WinXP "Internet Connection
Firewall". I logon from home to the HP at work using a 56k dialup modem.
When the XP firewall is active, I am unable to "transfer" a file from the
HP to the pc. I can not see find any settings for the firewall that would
specifically permit the file transfer. I have determined that by telling
WRQ to never use fast file transfers, I am able to do file transfers, but
I would prefer to keep the fast file transfer, if possible.
1.) Does anyone know if/how the WinXP Internet Connection Firewall can be
set to allow WRQ fast file transfers to the pc?
2.) If the answer to #1 is no, can I assume that a "better" firewall
product would be able to do the trick? Can other firewall products allow
this transfer? If so, what specifically would I need to tweak in
something like Zone Alarm to permit the transfer?
3.) Or, do I need to use a firewall at all with a dialup connection?
TIA
