As a percentage of GNP, most of Europe spends far more, as does Japan. The US
has become rather stingy of late in any activity which might promote peace
and well-being, world health being prime among them.

Surprisingly, most of the US's contribution to world health now comes not
from the Republican-led and administered Congress but from the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation. The Foundation just announced another $200 million
to fight malaria in Africa. See the eighth link down at:

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has plans to distribute $24 billion
dollars over the next decade to combat the most severe of the world's
diseases. The United States government has never begun to do anything of any
similar magnitude.
