Dear Colleagues,

When I arrived at UTC last summer, Chancellor Stacy asked me to set as one
of my highest priorities the development of a strategic plan for Academic
Affairs. Early in the fall semester we selected a committee to work on the
planning process. That committee included representatives of all segments
of the campus community -- faculty, staff, students, administrators,
alumni, and supporters of our academic programs.

The committee has met monthly since October and together we have written
the first draft of a document that represents our collective vision of the
strategic plan for Academic Affairs at UTC. We would now like to solicit
your comments.

The draft document has been posted to the UTC web site, and can be accessed
by clicking on the following link: http://www.utc.edu/~academic/ and then
clicking on "Academic Affairs Strategic Planning Draft Document."

I hope that each of you will take the time to read through this document
carefully and that you will provide us with your feedback. We will collect
all of the comments we receive and incorporate as many of them as feasible
into a final draft, which will be submitted to Chancellor Stacy for his
review and approval.

I recognize that in these times of deep and painful budget cuts, it may
seem like a waste of time to be thinking about what we might hope to
achieve in the future, when most of us are busy worrying about how we can
preserve what we have in the present. Nonetheless, the optimist in me says
that things will eventually get better, that we will recover what we have
lost, and that we will be able to move ahead with at least some of the top
priorities identified in our plan. And so I encourage you to contribute to
this effort that will guide us through these difficult times into what we
all hope will be a bright future.

Thank you.

Cordially,

John Friedl
