Had a chance this week while attending a state meeting of fisheries
biologists to talk with the guy who put together the seahorse exhibit at
the Chattanooga aquarium. I told him how much fun we had during our
Nedfest visit. Here's a few interesting facts on the weedy and leafy
seadragons at the aquarium. They were purchased from the one guy in
southern Oz who's allowed to capture expecting males, collect their young
upon hatching, and then return males to the wild. The leafy juveniles cost
the aquarium $3,000 USD a piece, but the weedy's were only $300 USD (or was
it the other way around?). The Baltimore aquarium has a similar exhibit
(which I saw last summer); turns out they worked together on configuring
the displays. The Choo-choo aquarium has successfully bred two batches of
leafy seadragons (like the had anything to do with the actual
breeding). They believe they are some of first to be bred in
captivity. BTW, is there a collective noun for seadragons other than a
school? I guess it would be a herd for seahorses! Perhaps that's a
challenge to list. Any suggestions?
