I do not agree with Donna, Homesteading does not mean you have nowhere
to go for support. Actually the 3rd party support is always better than
HP Support, at least when it comes to the 3k and MPE. I can't count the
times I have called HP for support only to have the HP rep ask me if a
HP3000 is a printer or a server, and then they send a HPUX guy out to
fix it, and the HPUX guy then needs me to coach him through the MPE
dialog.

I recently had a software vendor tell me I need to hurry-up and buy a
HPUX box, and start moving to it, testing things, so I'll be ready in
2006. I ask him; what's up with 2006? He said; didn't you hear, HP is
discontinuing support on your 3k in 2006. I relied; Duh, of course I
heard that, but HP hasn't been supporting this box for last ten years,
so what's gonna change in 2006, besides that it is official now?

I haven't used HP Support for past two years, since then, when I call
the 3rd party support (www.Beachglen.com) I feel confident that they
know more about this box than I.

i wish i had something helpful to tell matthew....<sigh>

however -- for all you that are planning on homesteading *this* is the
sort
of thing that you've got to be prepared for! i can't stress enough
the
impact the decision to homestead may (and probably will) have on your
business. for many, your environment is such that you'll never see
something like the above. but are you prepared for hardware failures?
or
other (s/w?) catastrophes? what happens when even the 3rd-party h/w
vendors
can't find a <whatever it is that just died> for you....at any price?

i'm not trying to discourage the homesteaders -- really! but it's easy
to
say "we're homesteading" -- two (maybe three :-) words, four syllables
--
but more than tough to accomplish. you've *really* got to weigh the
impact
of your decision and be prepared for <whatever>. i know at my shop,
inadequate preparation is frequently viewed as a 'career threatening
move'..... - d

Come, my friends, 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are.
