Think you don't need to know anything about copyright and fair use? Do you
use reprints in your class? How about graphics and images as a part of
your online courses? If so, you need to know more about the legal aspects
of using copyrighted works in an educational environment.
New federal statutes and judicial opinions are shifting the balance of
power to copyright holders--creators, publishers and the entertainment
industry--at the expense of educators. Indeed, the concept of "fair use"
for education is being narrowed by
law and undermined by technology. Even so, institutions of higher education
are legally liable for any violations of the copyright law, as it is
currently interpreted and
applied. This teleconference will use scenarios based on real-world
situations to discuss key copyright and fair use issues.
Also, the Walker Teaching Resource Center is sponsoring an online seminar
for faculty that will begin February 21.... This seminar (provided ONLY
online through the Blackboard system) will provide self-instruction on the
basics of copyright and fair use for higher education and will also provide
a threaded discussion forum for participants to discuss case studies.
Pre-registration is required for this series. (Call x4188 to pre-register
or e-mail [log in to unmask]).
