As it turns out, the SLT tape was created on a DDS2 tape drive and was
trying to be read by a DDS1 tape drive. They are upward compatible but not
backward compatible.

To me, 'BAD LIF MAGIC' indicates a problem with the tape
or tape drive, not with the disk drive.
Are you installing this disk to be your new ldev1? Or are
you just trying to add this disk to your system. I'm a bit
confused at what you're trying to do.
