Kent Wallace asked:

If using a DLT-IV media the DLT8000 writes approximately 40GB per tape
(native). However, the tape drive normally does hardware compression
(and/or you may use software compression) and the quoted "normal"
compression ratio of 2:1 yields 80GB per tape. Of course, the
compressibility of your data may vary widely. Many kinds of data are
already compressed and/or encrypted which effectively prevents additional
compression, but I've also seen production systems achieve 10:1
compression. Because of the wide variance of compressibility of data I
prefer to consider primarily the native capacity of disc and tape drives
and when comparing them.
