LZW purge from archive

We are using:

LZW[pm]: (C) 1991, 1997 - Telamon, Inc. - Version A.03.33 [A.02.04] (Apr  4
199)

['199' is not a typo on my part.]

I stored (compressed 26 files into an LZW archive. Now I want to purge one
of them. I use the command:

   LZW.UTIL.SYS "-p FILE.GROUP.ACCOUNT -f LZWFILE"

but this does not consistently purge files.

Any theories?
