3:30pm - 5:00pm
Chancellor's Conference Room

Members Present:
Paul Watson Leroy Fanning
Mike Jones Tom Losh
Laura Mincy Bill Miller

Members Excused:
Bill Stacy Kino Becton
John Thornton Jennifer Wilson
Frank Kinser

Chairman Watson convened the meeting and thanked the members for their
participation in this afternoon's session.

The group then reviewed the minutes of the March 27, 2002, Steering
Committee meeting which were approved by vote of the members.

Chairman Watson informed the group that the university has received formal
notification from the NCAA approving the institution's request for an
extension of the timeframe for the site review team's visit. The NCAA has
acted to allow the institutional review visit to take place in June 2003,
rather than January 2003.

Dr. Watson talked about the advantages/realities of this extension:

1.) Will give additional time for completion of the self-study
2.) We must all take effective advantage of this extension in
completing the best self-study possible
3.) The entire university community must be part of this review
process; it is important that a thorough review of all relevant areas is
conducted; it is imperative that any problem be identified in the
self-study process rather than during the team's visit.

Chairman Watson called on each of the committee chairs for their reports on
the progress of each of their committees a summary of their updates follows:

    A. Governance and Commitment to Rules Compliance - Fanning: the
committees report will be complete no later than December
    B. Academic Integrity - Jones: the committee plans to meet again in
June; the Records office personnel have been most helpful in identifying
several crucial dated elements
    C. Fiscal Integrity - Miller: the committee is utilizing the work
initially completed by Dr. Tuipin and the dates compiled in conjunction
with UTC's SAC's review
    D. Equity, Welfare and Sportsmanship - Losh: the committee is making
progress toward completing its report particularly in the area of gender
equity

Dr. Watson called for any old business. There being none he asked for any
new business which involved the reminder of the monthly meeting schedule.

Respectfully Submitted
