The department of Philosophy and Religion would like to remind all
interested faculty, staff and students (and their advisors) that Dr. Yigal
Levin, visiting research fellow from Israel, will be offering his course on
"Biblical Archaeology and History" this spring, on Tuesdays and Thursdays,
12:15-1:30 pm.
The course will deal with the "real world" in which the Bible was created -
the Ancient Near East and Ancient Israel - through the examination of
material remains and written sources. It will examine some of the major
issues in modern biblical studies: the historical reliability of the Bible,
the religion of Ancient Israel, daily life in biblical times and more. The
course can be taken either as REL 492-001, ANTH 499-001 or HIST 499-003
(the HIST code isn't in the computer yet, but should be soon). In any
case, there are no prerequisites and no special approval is needed.

In addition, Dr. Levin will be offering a course on "The Old Testament
Prophets" in the first pm summer session, Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30-8:10
pm, May 7-June 18, 2003. The course will examine the concept of prophecy
in the biblical world, the roles of individual prophetic figures, and the
development of the prophetic literature included in the Hebrew Bible. The
course is listed as REL 492-001, there are no prerequisites and no special
approval is needed.

As Dr. Levin will be leaving us in the summer, this will probably be a last
chance to take courses like these for a long time.
