The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is offering two
Literature Translation Courses that your students may find interesting or
may find useful as part of their minor programs in Humanities, Latin
American Studies, Women's Studies, or as an elective. They are:
MLNG 310 (German Masterpieces in Translation), MWF, 9:00-9:50 (3)
The readings will include, among others, the following seven authors and
works: Ludwig Tieck, "Fair Eckbert" (Der blonde Eckbert), Gottfried
Keller, "A Village Romeo and Juliet" (Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorf), Arthur
Schnitzler, "Lieutenant Gustl" (Leutnant Gustl), Bertolt Brecht, "Life of
Galileo" (Leben des Galilei), Thomas Mann, "Tonio Kröger", Franz Kafka,
"The Metamorphosis" (Die Verwandlung), Hermann Hesse, "Demian".
MLNG 302 (Latin American Women Writers in Translation), TT, 10:50-12:05 (3)
The readings will include selections from the works of writers whose work
is already known in the U.S.--Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Alfonsina Storni,
Gabriela Mistral (Nobel Prize in Literature, 1945), Rosario Castellanos,
Luisa Valenzuela, Isabel Allende, and Laura Esquivel--as well as writers
who, although well known and respected in their country and the other Latin
American countries, are relative unknowns in this country.
All readings, discussions, and written work will be in Engish.
