I see no reason why your HP3000 wouldn't be able to process those
requests. It should still be usable way pass 2009, BITS DON'T WARE-OUT!,
and because of the simplicity of the MPE OS, the staff shouldn't be a
problem either.

Oh, but you need a supported platform. Go ahead, buy one, port all your
3k apps to your new supported commodity. I am about 99.9% sure that the
IT Industry leaders HP, Micro$oft, or others, will find a way to
convince you to migrate again, before 2010, because they need your
$upport. So, who is supporting who. Keep the big industry bean counters
out of your pockets, and go with 3rd-party support. They will actually
support you, and maybe as far into the future as 2025 ;-)

Now, what scenario were you talking about?

Has anyone considered the following type of scenario:

It is September 1, 2009. A letter arrives from the Sales Tax Department
of
[insert your favorite] State. They wish to perform an audit of you
sales
tax collections for 2006. Your back-up tapes are sitting safely in
some
off-site storage facility, but where will you restore these files?
What
software will you use to create the reports required to satisfy this
audit
request? What staff will you have with the skills to use this data?
etc.
