that makes sense. for the one device class that's breaking the scripts, the
display order is 'mostly sorted' -- the anomalies are recent additions/changes
made via ioconfig.

it sure does. thanks :-)
otoh, now i've got to invent -- late friday afternoon -- a way to change the
script to produce a list of devices (by class name) in ldev order. not such a big
deal (except now we're dealing with permanent files instead of temporary <sigh>)
but not what i want to be doing at this point int he work week. oh well....
