I think that you are asking for hardware and OS features that most vendors
haven't even thought of yet.  Gavin had a great proposed syntax for a
:SHUTDOWN command posted here a while ago.  Maybe what you want is that
command (wishfully in MPE/iX 8.0) with something like a ";POWEROFF NOW"
option added.  Then all you need is some external sensor affair that makes
the command happen.

A great addition to any OS would be the ability to automate critical basic
functions like =SHUTDOWN and have a documented and accessable method of
feeding the OS data to cause such actions.  I don't know much yet about SNMP
but it seems to have some means of communicating actions or status between
devices.  I know that some APC units have a SNMP connection but what is
actually being sent out?
